This word has many meanings based on how it is used. 

The most common translation is ‘religion’, however, it also means retribution or paying back of debts. 

In informal Arabic, dīn refers to the principles and lifestyle of a religion, be that Islam, Christianity, etc. 

In the Qurʾān , the word dīn appears frequently and is translated differently depending on the context of the verse. For example, in Qurʾān sūrah (chapter) one, ayah (verse) three, ‘yawm-al dīn’ refers to the Day of Judgement.
