1. Literally, sign. Many verses of the Qurʾān refer to Allah’s signs (Āyah-tul Allah), from natural phenomena to miracles of the prophets. Allah’s oneness means his signs are manifest throughout existence.

2. Technically, a verse of the Qurʾān. Each sūrah (chapter) of Qurʾān contains anywhere from 3 t0 286 Āyāt (verses).
