Means ‘slave/servant.’ It appears in many common Arabic names. For example, the name ‘Abd Allah means ‘servant of Allah,’ and ‘Abd al-Rahman means ‘servant of the All-Merciful (Allah).’

The translation of ʿabd as slave has a naturally negative connotation when it refers to bondage between humans. In Islam, ʿabd has a positive connotation because the relationship is between a person and Allah. By identifying as an ‘Abd of Allah, one expresses a desire for all of their actions to be for the pleasure of Allah, and in line with His commands, especially because one understands that this state will be the best for a person in this life and the hereafter. This mindset goes hand in hand with the meaning of the word Muslim, which means ‘one who submits.’
